When choosing a rolling shutter, the most important decision is the material. Aluminium and galvalume are the two most popular choices in India — and the right answer depends entirely on where your property is, what you're securing, and how much maintenance you're willing to do.
After 40+ years of installing rolling shutters across Delhi NCR and Pan India, here's our honest comparison.
What Is Galvalume?
Galvalume is a steel sheet coated with a zinc-aluminium-silicon alloy (typically 55% aluminium, 43.5% zinc, 1.5% silicon). It was developed specifically to outperform plain galvanized iron (GI) in harsh environments. In rolling shutters, galvalume provides:
- 2–4× better corrosion resistance than plain GI
- Excellent UV and heat reflectance
- Stronger structural rigidity per rupee than aluminium
What Is Aluminium Alloy Shutter?
Aluminium rolling shutters use extruded alloy 6063-T5 — a double-wall hollow slat profile. The aluminium is either anodized (self-protecting oxide layer) or powder-coated. Key characteristics:
- 50% lighter than galvalume/GI at the same width
- Zero rust — aluminium does not corrode in normal environments
- Available in any RAL colour with powder coating
- Quieter in operation (spring and motorized)
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Aluminium | Galvalume |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent (no rust) | Very Good (2-4× better than GI) |
| Weight | Light (50% less than GI) | Medium |
| Price per sq ft | ₹450–650 | ₹380–520 |
| Max Width | Up to 18 ft | Up to 24 ft |
| Colour Options | Any RAL, anodized | Mill finish / painted |
| Best For | Retail, showrooms, homes | Warehouses, factories, coastal |
| Noise Level | Quieter | Slightly noisier |
| Maintenance | Zero maintenance | Minimal |
When to Choose Aluminium
Choose aluminium rolling shutters when:
- Your opening is a retail shop, showroom, or modern commercial space
- Aesthetics matter — you want a specific colour or anodized finish
- The opening is up to 18 ft wide
- You need a motorized or smart shutter (aluminium runs quieter)
- The property is in an urban or residential area without heavy industrial exposure
When to Choose Galvalume
Choose galvalume rolling shutters when:
- The property is a warehouse, godown, factory, or loading bay
- You need wide spans — 18 ft to 24 ft or more
- The environment is coastal, humid, or chemically exposed
- Budget is the primary constraint and finish colour doesn't matter
- You need perforated or insulated variants (commonly available in galvalume)
Our recommendation: For 90% of retail shops in Delhi NCR, aluminium wins — quieter, zero maintenance, and better looking. For warehouses, logistics, and factories, galvalume wins on cost-per-sq-ft and span capability.
Can You Get Motorized in Both?
Yes — both aluminium and galvalume shutters can be motorized with the same AC tubular or chain drive motors. The motor choice depends on shutter weight and frequency of use, not the curtain material. See our motorized shutters page for details.
What About GI (Plain Galvanized Iron)?
Plain GI is still widely used for very large industrial openings where budget is critical. However, galvalume has largely replaced GI in quality installations because the cost difference is minimal (5–10%) and the performance difference is significant. We recommend galvalume over plain GI for all new installations.
