The most common upgrade question we get: is motorized worth it? The honest answer is — it depends on how often you operate the shutter. Here is the full comparison.
Cost Difference
A motorized shutter adds ₹8,000–25,000 to the base cost of any shutter (depending on motor type, shutter weight, and whether smart control is included). For a standard 10×8 ft aluminium shutter:
- Manual spring: ₹38,000–45,000 total installed
- Motorized (basic remote): ₹50,000–62,000 total installed
- Motorized (app + timer): ₹55,000–72,000 total installed
The Break-Even Point
Manual shutters opened 6+ times daily will typically need spring replacement every 2–3 years (cost: ₹2,500–5,000 per service). A quality motor runs for 8–12 years with minimal maintenance. At 6 operations/day:
- Manual: spring replacements every ~2 years = ₹3,500 × 5 times in 10 years = ₹17,500
- Motorized: one motor service at year 5–6 = ₹3,000–5,000
Add convenience and time savings, and motorized breaks even at around 3–4 years for moderate-use commercial shutters.
The Power Cut Question
This is the most common concern in India — and it's a valid one. All our motorized shutters come with manual override. If power is cut, you disengage the motor with a pull cord and operate the shutter manually. No power — no problem. The override takes 5–10 seconds to activate.
Optional: battery backup units (UPS) are available for ₹4,000–8,000 extra, allowing 15–25 operations on battery during a power cut without needing to engage the manual override.
Head-to-Head Comparison
| Feature | Manual Spring | Motorized |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher by ₹8,000–25,000 |
| Maintenance cost (10yr) | Higher (spring replacements) | Lower |
| Daily effort | Physical effort required | Press remote or phone |
| Power cut operation | Always works | Manual override available |
| Speed of operation | Slower | Faster (2–5 seconds) |
| Smart control | Not possible | App, timer, Alexa, Google |
| Staff misuse risk | Higher (slamming) | Controlled operation |
| Best for | Low-use (<4×/day) | High-use (4+×/day) |
Smart Motorized: Timer and App Features
Our motorized shutters support RF remote, smartphone app (Android/iOS), timer-based scheduling, and integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Practical use cases:
- Set shutter to open automatically at 9:00 AM and close at 9:30 PM
- Check shutter status remotely from your phone
- Integrate with security alarm — shutter closes if alarm triggers
- Multiple remotes for multiple staff without giving anyone keys
Our Recommendation
For any shop opened more than 4 times daily, motorized is worth the extra investment. For godowns or storage units opened once or twice a day, manual spring is perfectly fine and costs less. For residential garages, motorized is almost always the right choice for convenience and longevity.
