Collapsible gates were the standard choice for Indian shops for decades. Rolling shutters have become dominant — but collapsible gates are still sold and still installed. Here is when each is the right choice, from our perspective after installing both types for 40+ years.

How They Differ

Collapsible gates fold sideways into a compact stack. They are almost always manual, always see-through, and typically made from mild steel rod. They require wall space on either side of the opening to park the folded gate.

Rolling shutters roll up vertically into a coil above the opening. They can be fully solid or perforated. They require vertical space above the opening but no side space.

When Collapsible Gates Still Make Sense

Despite rolling shutters being superior on most counts, collapsible gates remain the right choice when:

  • There is absolutely no space above the opening for a shutter hood (e.g. mezzanine floor immediately above)
  • The opening is in a covered area where weather protection is not needed
  • Maximum visibility into the shop when closed is required (e.g. inside a well-guarded mall)
  • Budget is severely constrained and security requirements are low

Why Rolling Shutters Dominate Modern Retail

The shift to rolling shutters over the last two decades is driven primarily by two factors: security and weather protection. A solid rolling shutter is significantly harder to breach than a collapsible gate — and it keeps rain and dust out of the shop when closed. For modern retail, the aesthetics also matter: a clean aluminium shutter presents better than a rattling steel gate.

Our recommendation: For any new shop construction or renovation where vertical space permits, install a rolling shutter. Only choose a collapsible gate when the ceiling height above the opening prevents a shutter hood, or when the opening is inside a covered, guarded premises.
